Ruby Wax komt naar Amsterdam! Op onze uitnodiging wordt ze op 21 april in de Westerkerk geïnterviewd over haar nieuwste boek 'Frazzled'. Ruby was met haar mix van comedy en lichte gestoordheid een van de meest geliefde en gevreesde interviewers ooit (Pamela Andersen en Imelda Marcos weten het nog goed). Ook maakte ze met Hans Teeuwen een hilarische Nederlandse serie. Na een diepe depressie richt ze zich sinds jaren op mentale gezondheid, waaronder mindfulness.
Wax wordt geinterviewd en spreekt op hilarische en uiterst bedachte wijze over de druk van ons dagelijkse leven, over stress en hoe moeilijk het soms kan zijn om gewoon de dag door te komen. Maar ook over hoe we het leven een beetje makkelijker kunnen maken voor onszelf.
Na een carrière als tv-presentator, comedian en actrice is Ruby Wax zich de laatste jaren gaan verdiepen in geestelijke gezondheid. Naar aanleiding van haar eigen depressies is ze in Oxford begonnen aan een Master in de psychologie, heeft ze twee jaar langs inrichtingen gereisd en is ze met vele ‘gewone’ mensen in gesprek gegaan over hun geestelijke problemen. Zo kwam ze erachter dat niet één op de vier mensen kampt met vragen over hoe te leven, maar dat iedereen hiermee worstelt. Het is zelf zo dat onze hersenen niet gemaakt zijn voor een leven in de 21e eeuw volgens haar.
Toch brengt ze ook goed nieuws: we kunnen onze hersenen trainen. Misschien werkt het niet voor iedereen, niet voor alle problemen en niet voor altijd, maar Ruby Wax is erachter gekomen dat mindfulness haar in staat stelde om beter om te gaan met de problemen van het moderne leven. Mindfulness is niet iets zweverigs, maar een praktische training om je gedachten en gevoelens beter te leren kennen en daardoor bewuster en gelukkiger door het leven te gaan. Donderdag 21 april wordt ze geïnterviewd over wat zij nodig acht voor een gezonder en gelukkiger leven en over hoe we een beetje minder slaaf en een beetje meer de meester van onze gedachten kunnen worden.
