Description

"Fantastic reflection of my true self""Better than mirror""Admirable technic""Academic level skills" are just some comments from the people whom Masha portraited.
In this 20-minutes session Masha will make a portrait of you, with the keywords of how you can describe yourself.
You can keep the portrait afterwards.
Masha's sinopsis"When I relocated to the Netherlands last year, I tried to submerge myself in Dutch society. I started to learn the Dutch language. And it occurred to me how much we are dependent of spoken words in day to day life. More dependent than we probably expect.
Sometimes I couldn’t find the right words to express myself and to be vocal about my feelings. Sometimes it made me be stuck inside my head. But along the line, I found myself getting a better understanding of myself. Who Iam, in this new culture. Who I am, in the midst of this new society. Whilst trying to understand others, I learned about myself. How my native language defines how I think. How I create images in my head using my mother tongue. Images of words. Images of people. Images of cultures. Images of societies. It made me wonder whether that is different for other people? Or is it common for everyone and is it a universal rule . That if you find the right words, you find the magic glue for understanding others and being understood.
That is why I started this project; portraying people whilst they explain themselves using languages they usually use to think. The languages that remain unspoken. The languages people primarily use only inside their heads. It gave me a chance to better understand those people. And I noticed that it gave the people I portrayed beautiful insights too.
I aimed at portraying people living in this Area. Amsterdam, Ransdorp. New inhabitants, people that moved here only a few years ago, as well as people being born here and having lived here their entire lives.
I only just started this project and I hope it will help me understand the secret behind the mysterious role of languages in our thinking processes. In how we identify things. Not by means of linguistic research. But by helping people expressing their authentic selves by using art. I just started. I will continue."
