During our Horizontal cinema, the movie is projected on the ceiling while the viewer lies down on a mattress. This practice resembles the romantic experience of watching the sky full of stars while lying in a grass meadow, allowing you to come into contact with a different perspective of looking at images since you are completely absorbed from above.
Every third Friday of the month we will be hosting a special Asian movies edition screening our best selection of art movies from Korea, Japan, China, Vietnam, HK, Taiwan, etc..
This time we selected Dolls (ドールズ Dōruzu), a 2002 Japanese film written, edited and directed by Japanese director Takeshi Kitano. A highly stylized art film, Dolls is part of Kitano's non-crime film oeuvre and unlike most of his other films, he does not act in it.
About the movie:
Dolls contains three stories about love, misery and madness which are supposedly intertwined. The film’s core is the story of Sawako and Matsumoto, a young couple of Japanese lovers engaged to be married despite their poverty.
It is a very quiet, subtle film, a meditation on love gone wrong with a strong visual emphasis on the changing of the seasons and the bonds of love over the progression of time.
The screening starts at approx. 19.30 - but take your time to come in earlier, find your spot and have a drink.
At 18.00 before the screening there will be a delicious japanese style dinner
