    Description

Blueprints, sunprints, cyanotypes… what is it all about? It’s all the same!

The cyanotype photo process is a printing process based on a mixture of iron compounds that are exposed to UV light. Once the prints are washed in water, they oxidise to create majestic Prussian Blue images.

During the workshop, we will walk you through every step of producing cyanotype prints, from making your own UV-photosensitive paper to developing the prints, and you will leave with a few sun prints of your own creation.

Flowers, weeds, leaves, keys, feathers, scissors, or any object with a distinctive shape will create an impressive poetic image. We will prepare our selection for you and encourage you to use the surroundings of the greenhouse, but feel free to bring your own objects as well!

Cyanotype was invented in 1841 by John Herschel and was popularised by a photographer and a botanist Anna Atkins, who used cyanotype to make exquisite monochrome images of British ferns and seaweeds. Her book ‘Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions’ (1843), is considered the first photographically illustrated book. Cyanotype can capture the tiniest detail of leaves and this fact along with the colour of cyanotype – the beautiful, vivid deep blue that echoes indigo - is a guarantee for wonderful unique prints.
