From civil society activist to young Mayor of Tirana (the capital of Albania), Erion Veliaj has had an unusual political career full of surprises and challenges.
Albania is a small country in the Balkans with only 2,8 million people and the most youthful capital in Europe. Isolated for decades under a ferocious communist dictatorship the country has undergone a dramatic transformation since 1990. Yet prejudices and outdated perceptions about Albania are still strong outside. Its capital, Tirana, is today a pioneer in innovative & sustainable city planning, with 105,408 trees planted last year. It is aiming to be one of the most attractive cities for young people in the region with new parks, playgrounds, nurseries, schools and pedestrian spaces, pulling the country towards the EU.
How to make a city more attractive for children with limited resources for children? Is Albania ready to begin EU accession talks? Is this a country where adventurous young Europeans should spend holidays?
